First Person Story: How I Will Plan to Save for My iPod Touch

I love my iPad 2. I use it for surfing the web, checking my email, reading, and just about everything else I could use my laptop for. The only downside is the size. While the new version is certainly slimmer than the first iPad, I would like something smaller for places where carrying the iPad isn’t convenient, like the gym. So, my next big tech purchase will be the newest generation of the iPod Touch, something I plan to buy as soon as I have enough money saved up.

The biggest decision I will have to make about this purchase is how many gigabytes I need. My iPad 2 has 32 GB, but that is rapidly filling up. I have a feeling I would download even more video, books, and apps on the iPod touch than my iPad because it will be handier to use when I’m lying in bed and trying to fall asleep. I will also be downloading plenty of music on it for my thrice-weekly visits to the gym.

The 64 GB iPod Touch seems like an obvious choice, but that does mean my purchase will cost even more money. I will be looking at around $400 for the 64 GB. I would save about $100 going for the 32 GB, so I plan to ask an Apple associate how many video and HD apps a 32 GB can hold because those are what I would use it for the most. If it’s more than I would ever download, I will just go with 32 GB rather than the 64 GB.

I plan to save a little bit of money out of every paycheck to make this purchase. I will put up $50 every two weeks, so I can have my iPod Touch in as little as three months, depending on the gigabytes I decide on. I will also be depositing the cash in my savings account so it can build a little bit of interest while I wait.

When it comes time for my purchase, my biggest money saver will be purchasing the product online. Sites like Amazon and Ebay don’t charge me sales tax. Since my county charges 8.1 percent sales tax, buying online will save me a little bundle. If I purchase the iPod Touch 64 GB, that’s about a $30 savings. I will also be using my MasterCard because it offers 1 percent cash back within 30 days. It’s not much, but every little bit counts when it comes to saving money!

This is my plan for purchasing my new tech gadget. It’s a good way to ensure I get exactly what I need and in a way that doesn’t break the bank. If all goes well, I will have my newest Apple addition by Easter.
