Fall Decorating Just for Kids

There is nothing like the crisp Fall air to get you in the mood for a bit of redecorating. It is also a great opportunity to teach your children how you can learn to really enjoy the Fall season, by bringing it indoors. During the Fall season you can add a special touch to your child’s room, by creating leaf shaped curtains. Making curtains in the shape of leaves for the Fall season can be a lot of fun, to make, and also add a special touch to a child’s room. For this project you can get your kids to help. This is a great opportunity to help your children learn about measuring, and brush up on some of their math skills.

First you will need to find just the right material for your homemade curtains. Obviously you will want the colors that match Fall. This is a fun job for your kids to do. You can try a leaf color that matches the décor in the rest of the room. Take them to a fabric store, or the fabric section of your local Wal-Mart store. Allow them to pick something made out of cotton material, since this is easier to sew, and hang as curtains. Once you have found your material, you will need to create a pattern to trace. You can sketch out your giant leaf pattern, after you have measured the window. Use a large piece of cardboard to measure out your leaf. Be sure to double check your measurements so that your leaf curtain actually covers the entire window. The leafs can be hung upside down, so that the bulk of the window is covered. Or if you prefer you can hang them the other way, it really is based on your personal preference.

Once you have your pattern all laid out you can lay it on the material, and trace it. Then you can cut out the leaf pattern. Leave a narrow hem at the bottom of the leaf since you are going to hang it upside down. The hem will be a rod pocket for your leaf curtain, so that you can easily hang it up on the windows. You can purchase the rod separately at your local Wal-Mart as well. The last thing left to do is simply hang your leaf shaped curtains. Remember that the curtains do not have to look perfect or hang perfect, but they will add a really special touch to any room. If you have a sewing machine, this is a good opportunity to teach your children how to use it as well. The instructions listed above can easily be adjusted to your own personal preferences.
