Everyday Evil

Most people have an image of evil being a dark, ugly being probably related to Satan and coming from the depths of Hell. Understandable. This has always been one of the ways we’ve tried to explain the evil that men do. I think there are different levels and grades of evil. You might encounter it in your place of business, down the street in a neighbor’s house or, hell, it might even be your very own boss……………..

“A family man”, well educated, perhaps Ivy League. Well spoken, gregarious, displaying a sense of humor, talks a great game and is almost always affable. Underneath that smiling, benevolent exterior beats the heart of a greedy, arrogant, mean-spirited person. He pats you on the back and tells you what a great job you’re doing, all the while looking for an excuse to get rid of you. He knows that you see through the “nice guy” persona and needs to regain control. He never looks you in the eye because he knows you’ve seen that evil, empty glint that few people notice. They don’t notice this evil because they need their jobs and accede to his every demand, no matter how distasteful. He knows all this and applies more and more pressure, making greater demands, not caring how this affects you. His greed knows no bounds, his sense of entitlement obscenely inflated, his lust for power unabated. An everyday evil, seldom recognized or confronted. Beware of this evil, steer clear and watch your back.
