Eventual Williams-Wozniacki Match to Determine U.S. Open Champion: A Fan’s Take

I am going to stick my neck out and predict that the unofficial women’s U.S. Open final will be played during the semifinal match, and it will be between Caroline Wozniacki and Serena Williams.

Wozniacki still has to make it past Andrea Petkovic, and Williams still has to make it past Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. On paper, it seems like Caroline Wozniacki should win the 2011 women’s U.S. Open. Her WTA rank is No. 1, and she’s been pretty darn good throughout the tournament. She should have good momentum from having won the 2011 New Haven and then having come from behind in her fourth-round match against Svetlana Kuznetsova to win 6-7, 7-5, 6-1. She’s been questioned for months and months about whether she deserved the rank of WTA No.1 — after all, she’s never won a grand slam. She has a lot to prove and truly winning the 2011 U.S. Open would be a great way for her to remove any doubt that she deserves her No.1 rank in the WTA.

Anyone who has been watching Serena Williams play should have the feeling that the only way Serena will lose is if Serena doesn’t play well. At her best, Serena Williams is unstoppable. I watched her play Ana Ivanovic on Monday, Sept. 5, 2011. I found it comical that the crowd didn’t seem to cheer Williams’ amazing nine aces against Ivanovic. It’s like everyone just took them for granted. Instead, when Ivanovic managed to get a point or an ace the crowd, especially the commentators, would cheer with amazement. It’s like they were more amazed that she could manage to best Serena for a point. If the event had been played in Roman times, it’d be the same type of excitement that would be generated if a gladiator managed to get off one shot before the 10 tigers that were descending upon him ended his time on earth.

There have been several interviews conducted between journalists and Serena and Caroline. There is such a stark difference between the two. You can just see Serena’s confidence. I don’t think I heard her say, “I’m No. 1 in the world” once. In fact, she sounded really humble and seemed more in-tune with her sister’s diagnosis with Sjogren’s syndrome and with how lucky she is to still be competing after all the health problems she has had then she is with her standings in the U.S. Open. Caroline Wozniacki’s interviews, on the other hand, could be used in drinking games. I’m quite sure that if you had to take a shot every time you heard her say “I’m number one in the world” you would not be able to legally drive anywhere afterwards.

It will be amazing to see either of these great women win the women’s 2011 U.S. Open; truly I’d be happy for Wozniacki if she could remove all the doubt people have regarding her worthiness of holding the WTA No. 1 rank. But I am biased in thinking that the best woman tennis player, ever, is Serena Williams. She and her family have been through so much which I think have really humbled this modern demi-goddess. Thus, I’d be even happier to see Serena claim the 2011 U.S. Open.
