DVD Review of “Contagion”

Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion, which features an all-star cast including Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, and Gwyneth Paltrow, is a long boring movie that traverses the unknown virus scare panic plateau once again. Been there, done that; can’t anyone think of anything new?

An extremely virulent form of microbe is spreading throughout the world and the race to find the cure is on. The problem that faces investigators is that they cannot find out how to make the virus mutate (an essential to finding the cure). In the meantime, anyone who comes in contact with the lethal disease is dead within 24-48 hours.

The cast of characters could have been played by anyone. As a matter of fact, they all could have switched roles with each other and the movie would be the same. What we have, is the CDC chasing people around the world trying to contain the outbreak; scientist trying to find the cure; and people dying and panicking. Is there anything new here at all?

Has anyone out there seen 1971’s Andromeda Strain? (So what if we are not dealing with E.T.s, it’s all the same.) I got to the point where I wished everyone would die and the movie would end.

Doesn’t anyone in Hollywood have a new idea?

My Rating: 2 of 5 Vaccinations.
