DIY Sewing Station for Small Spaces

This is an easy to create sewing station which fits perfectly into small spaces and enables you to keep all sewing notions at your fingertips while you sit at the sewing machine creating a fabric masterpiece.

Material Needed for Sewing Station

Two wood bar stools that have wood support slats connecting the stool legs
Four foot by two foot board (a smaller board will work)
Small wood shelf that attaches to wall
Wood drawer box or drawer divider
Glass jars with lids
Wood glue, nails, hammer, screws, drill, optional paint

DIY Sewing Station Location

Choose a room location that will accommodate the length of the board you chose and will provide enough depth for a chair. Wall space directly behind where the board will be placed is needed to accommodate the shelf and drawer box.

Create the Sewing Table Top

Place the board on top of the two wood bar stools. Scoot the bar stools out to either end of the board, leaving a space in the center for a sewing chair to go. Secure board onto bar stools with wood glue or nails/screws if desired. For an easily portable sewing station, don’t attach the board to the bar stools, the surface will remain stable without attaching.

Place sewing machine on center of table and put a chair in it’s place at the sewing table.

Sewing Table Storage

The wood support slats between the bar stool legs create an instant hanging rack for fabrics, lace, ribbon and so forth while you’re sewing. If additional shelving is needed more than hanging racks, cut boards (or have them cut at your local home improvement center) to fit right on top of the leg slats. Look for wood bar stools that have two sets of supports slats on their legs if creating shelving is desired, two sets of slats on each bar stool will provide four shelves for storing sewing notions.

Create Shelving Units

The small wood wall shelf (which can be anywhere from one foot to four feet in length) will be attached to the wall behind the sewing machine table. Before attaching the shelf to the wall, glue jar lids to the underside of the shelf. After shelf is installed, fill glass jars with buttons, beads and other small sewing notions and screw jar onto lid. This creates see-through storage at your fingertips under the shelf and storage on top of the shelf.

Attach the wood drawer box behind the sewing machine in an easily accessible location so you can reach it while sitting down at the sewing machine. The wood drawer box, designed to hold flatware, will have seven oblong spaces, when screwed into the wall (bottom side against the wall) it creates seven shadow box type shelves perfect for holding spools of thread, elastic and the like.

To Paint or Not to Paint

All pieces of this DIY sewing station can be painted to match and create a unified look, or leave the wood in it’s natural state. A fabric ‘skirt’ can be created for the table to hide any unwanted clutter stored on the bar stool shelves. The sewing table surface also has a multitude of other household uses (side board, serving table, homework table, etc.),, just tuck the sewing machine under the table out of sight.
