Discover Germany’s Best Beaches

Germany’s northern coastline and islands include a wide range of phenomenal beaches. Locals and visitors alike enjoy sunbathing, swimming and water sports at famous resorts or on quiet stretches of sand extending from the North Frisian Islands in the northwestern part of the country to its eastern shores along the Baltic Sea.

Famous worldwide for its sandy shores, Sylt is the largest of the North Frisian Islands. Crowded in the summer months and popular with the jet-set crowd, the island hosts a variety of beaches that cater to differing tastes. Nudity is common on many German beaches and especially in certain sections of the Sylt coastline, so it is important to be aware of this fact when choosing where to sunbathe or explore. The main beach near the town of Hörnum provides a family-friendly environment with gentle waves.

Less crowded and more tranquil than Sylt, Amrum attracts visitors with its North Sea atmosphere and picturesque villages. The island also lays claim to having Europe’s widest sandy beach. The “Kniepsand” stretches along Amrum’s western shore for over 10 kilometers, providing ample opportunities for relaxing sunset strolls to see the island’s red and white striped lighthouse rising off the dunes. When you’re not swimming or working on your tan, enjoy watching some of the thousands of seabirds that call Amrum home.

On the Baltic Sea side of Germany’s coastline you’ll find the resort town of Kühlungsborn. The level, sandy stretch of shoreline attached to the town has much to offer beach lovers. Dotted with blue and white shaded chairs and sunbathing tourists, the main part of the beach is ideal for families with small children who can enjoy activities like kite flying, building sand castles or splashing in the surf under the watchful eyes of trained lifeguards. A lengthy promenade complete with a Ferris wheel adds to the fun. A separate area for nude swimming and a special beach for dog owners are also not far away.

Pressed up against the Polish border is another German resort town, Heringsdorf, and the municipality’s well known beach. In addition to enjoying water sports and other typical beach-related activities, visitors to this far point can view the “Bäderarchitektur” (spa architecture) of the villas, hotels and boarding houses that form a backdrop to the beach. Additionally, they can stroll along Europe’s longest promenade or Germany’s longest sea bridge. Today, frequent festivals and concerts entertain beachgoers at what once was a favorite bathing spot for German emperors.
