Christmas Music Fills Me with Joy

Yesterday my husband phoned to see how my day was going and I asked him, “Do you think I’m weird?” I shared with him what I’m about to share with you.

Sometimes in the quiet of the morning or the hectic of the afternoon, I will shut off the radio, the television and turn on my Christmas CDs – even in July or September. The music lifts my spirits and I enjoy singing out loud (alone of course) and singing praise.

There is something wonderful about Christmas music, if you do not believe me – just give a listen to Third Day belt out Joy to the World here.

In typical fashion, I turned the speakers up full tilt and I’m singing out loud all the words when the phone rang. My employer had called to ask me to take an assignment for the newspaper. The caller said to me, “Is that Christmas music you’re listening to?! You are weird!”

I phoned the receptionist at our church immediately and thankfully she had a tender ear as I told her what had just happened. We prayed together and I shared that probably everyone in the news room at that very moment was probably getting a good chuckle while they joked about me listening to Christmas music in September. Then the church secretary asked me which CD I was listening to and when I told her “Third Day,” she said, “Oh, I love their Christmas CD, too.”

I should have asked if she listens to them all year. Maybe she thinks I’m weird, too.

You can call me weird if you want. I believe that you become a product of your environment. And, quite frankly, my environment is very peaceful and joyful.

In Mark 13:13, Jesus warned us that, “Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.” In other words, the world will call me “weird” because I listen to Christmas music at any time during the year.

I am singing “Joy to the World” and hoping earth receives her King.
