Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: A Player’s Perspective

Gameplay

Gameplay consists of several different modes: single player campaign, online multiplayer, survival, and co-op missions. The campaign mode is easy to follow, and characters from the past Modern Warfare games are reintroduced. The game constantly throws surprise turns at you, and gives you many types of missions. You get to be a juggernaut, a part of a military team, and a stealthy undercover sniper. Out of all the campaigns in the series, I enjoyed this one the most. It’s only downfall is that it is rather short for a campaign.

Cooperative missions are similar to those in the past. You can partner up with a friend, or join a random online game. You are given a particular objective and you fight to achieve it. This can be completed in easy, normal, hardened, or veteran difficulties. There are sixteen different scenarios to choose from.

Online multiplayer has traditionally been one of the most popular features of the Call of Duty series, and a personal favorite. MW3’s multiplayer exceeded my expectations, and I found it to be my favorite multiplayer of the whole series. A new feature of MW3 is the killstreak reward packages. Now you can choose to use the assault package which is similar to the past and allows you to get rewards for kill streaks such as a predator missile, helicopter, or air strike. The assault package resets after each death. You can also opt to use the support package. This set mostly gives rewards that assist the team as a whole like ballistic vests and UAVs. The best part about this package is that it doesn’t reset after you die! The final package is the strike package. This option lets you increase the amount of perks you have as a reward for kill streaks. If you can get to eight kills, you unlock all perks!

A nice spin off of the “horde” mode used in the past is the new survival mode. It can be played alone, or with a friend. There are many maps to choose from, and the difficulty gradually increases as you unlock maps. While playing survival you can buy not only guns and grenades, but you can buy air strikes and other rewards.

Replayability

The replayability of this game is very high. Even after you’ve finished the campaign mode you can progress endlessly on multiplayer. There are hours of play to complete in co-op and survival mode too. Since multiplayer is my personal favorite, I think this game can be played repeatedly for years.

Graphics and Audio

Graphics seem slightly improved from past Call of Duty releases. This game doesn’t have the best graphics out there, but they’re still very good. Fires smolder, water flows, and dust flies. I am impressed with both nature and cityscapes. Everything appears smooth and flows seamlessly. I personally think the entire franchise struggles with illustrating greenery like bushes as you walk through them, but this is also pretty common in other first person shooters. Unfortunately the graphics in multiplayer aren’t as great as single player, but I imagine multiplayer requires much more support.

The audio in this game is diverse and descriptive as well. As usual, the all-important effects such as being able to hear gunfire and footsteps are present, but you aren’t limited to the basics. With a good set of speakers or a nice headset you can even hear the bugs as they buzz around you. I was pleased with the variety of music that signals the start of each game.
