Book Clock

Aw, a nursery or a little child’s room is the most adorable thing. It smells so nice and there’s all that cute furniture. Everywhere you look are pretty colors and miniature everything. It’s all just too sweet. If you’re decorating a nursery or a child’s bedroom one of the cutest little things you can make for the room is a clock. No, kids can’t tell time but the clock is so adorable that it’s absolutely perfect for a child’s room.

Take a book of Mother Goose nursery rhymes, or another book, and use it to make a standing clock. The book must be really thin and have the classic, printed cardboard cover. Lay a ruler from corner to corner to find the center of the book, or if you prefer, put the clock into the book off-center. Use a marker or pen to make a dot where you want the center of the clock to be.

Look at a craft store or shop online to find a clock set. The set is just the hands, numbers, and the workings of the clock; these clocks aren’t set in a unit or cabinet. They’re made for people who design and create their own clocks. Generally, these are a brass color but can easily be painted pink, blue, or another color. Use paint made especially for metal for best results.

The clock pieces come with instructions and you’ll find them very easy to follow. Drill a hole in the front book cover and the guide will tell you how large of a hole you’ll need to drill. Make sure you buy a clock set that has a long enough post on it to accommodate the particular book you have. If you end up with a clock set that has too short of a post you can still do the project. Just open the book up and put the clock backing between the back cover and the back page (it won’t show if the book is standing on a shelf).

After inserting and attaching the back you’ll then attach the hands to the front of the book. Move the hands around as you apply peel-n-stick numbers. Start by placing the “12”, then the “6”, the “3” and the “9”, then place the other letters as well, spacing them evenly apart.

The standing child’s book clock is really cute but you can also make it into a set. Before drilling the book, tear out the first and last page – or other choices – and frame them. Display the three pieces together for a cute nursery or bedroom set suitable for a boy or a girl.
