Blue Exorcist Episode Nine “Memories” –Review

This episode continues directly from the previous one. It features a stare down between Rin and the teacher who is apparently trying to kill him. Rin is about to alert Yukio to this fact, but he is abruptly interrupted by Mephisto, who suddenly appears and bowls him over. It turns out that the entire scenario had been the “exwire authorization exam” to see if they would become esquires, and they had been under very close supervision the whole time.

Everyone ends up in the infirmary, where the kids all have various reactions to having been “punked” by their instructors. Poor Izumo is upset because she is certain that she got the worst grade of any of them because of her earlier behavior and the way she had frozen up during combat. Suguro attempts to give her a pep talk and rags on two of the other students who hadn’t done very much during the battle. (They don’t care about what he thinks of them. Rin however is greatly impressed that they can actually talk, and that one of them is a really good ventriloquist.)

One of the kids asks how Rin managed to kill the ghoul. Rin deflects the question in a very vague way and declares he is full of “mistake.” (He meant mystery.)

Meanwhile, Yukio has a word with the ghoul-summoning teacher, whose name is Noihaus. It seems that Mister Noihaus overstepped his bounds and Yukio doesn’t like that he endangered the other students. He also doesn’t like that Noihaus nearly exposed Rin’s identity to the other students. Noihaus states that he was acting under orders, and he’d been told to use deadly force on Rin. Yukio is definitely not happy about this.

Later, Shiemi is at the shop giving her baby Greenman some water when Yukio turns up. Shiemi is extremely flustered and apparently harbors a crush. She tries to act more or less like a professional businesswoman but Yukio has come to talk about her future education. She is nervous and very uncertain, but Yukio gives her a pep talk. As he’s reassuring her about the test and events of the exam however, he becomes concerned about Noihaus, and leaves.

The next scene is night time, and Rin is asleep. Mr. Noihaus is walking the halls. He enters Rin’s bedroom, and stabs what turns out to be a pillow under the cover. He hears a gun and turns to see Yukio who would like to know what Noihaus thinks he’s doing.

Meanwhile, it turns out that Rin had been sleeping in a different room. Shiemi wakes him up, and before any explanations can occur, there are gunshots. The scene shifts to Noihaus who is attacking Yukio. They take the discussion to the rooftop where Yukio demands to know why Noihaus is trying to kill Rin. Noihaus however is not inclined to answer. Instead, he summons his most powerful ghoul and sends it after Yukio.

The battle is interrupted by Rin, who goes after Noihaus. The battle does not go very well at first, but Rin is rescued by Yukio, who destroys Noihaus’ summoning circle. It turns out that Noihaus is one of the survivors of the Blue Night and holds Rin personally responsible for the death of his family, who were killed when they tried to help him.

Noihaus attacks, but Rin takes the blow. Rin asks if Noihaus feels better, then tell him that he can attack him as much as he wants, as long as Noihaus only comes after him (paraphrased, “don’t drag innocents into this.”) Noihaus has a strong emotional reaction to Rin’s request. Noihaus retreats, declaring that it isn’t over and there are other people who will want to kill Rin for the same reason that Noihaus does.

The scene shifts to Shiemi, who is heading up the stairs after Yuki and Rin. On the way up she meets Noihaus who is heading down stairs. Shiemi is understandably concerned, but Noihaus brushes her off and continues down the stairs.

Meanwhile, the wound that Noihaus dealt is already starting to heal up. Rin notes that this is pretty much confirmation that he’s a monster. Yukio is upset by the comment, but doesn’t try to reassure him. Then Shiemi appears and Rin has to hide his tail very quickly. Shiemi is extremely concerned and does not take very well to his attempt to brush her off. She goes into Doctor Mode and demands that he lie down so that she can treat his injuries.

They have an extremely cute exchange that ends with Shiemi declares (with utterly adorable determination) that she has “decided” (to become an Esquire). Meanwhile, Yukio is thinking about Rin in a somewhat envious fashion. It’s very clear that Yukio does care a great deal about Rin.

The scene shifts to Mephisto, who is congratulating the class on having all made it to “Exwire” rank. There’s a party, and Mephisto has a conversation with Yukio about Noihaus. He apologizes and states that he hadn’t known that Noihaus would overstep his bounds and actually go after Rin. Mephisto promises that he won’t let something like that happen again. Yukio responds with a “I hope you don’t,” that carries a certain level of threat to it.

Yukio is called away, and Mephisto gets on the phone with someone, telling him to come see Rin. The other person says he can’t pass through the school’s barrier, and Mephisto says that he’ll have Noihaus let the other person in. Then Mephiso is distracted by whatever it is the kids are up to. We get a view of the person in question, who turns out to be Mephisto’s younger brother Amaimon, who has apparently just killed a very big demon of some kind. We leave Amaimon wondering how powerful Rin is, and why Mephisto and Satan are so interested in him.
