Black Ops: A Love/Hate Relationship

Call of Duty: Black Ops has certainly been a fun game to play! I own a Playstation 3 system, and my friends and I find ourselves truly addicted to logging into the Playstation Network solely for the purpose of joining a multiplayer match on the Black Ops servers and gunning down any willing enemy players from all around the world. We are not always fortunate enough to be on the winning side of these violent transactions, but in the event of a loss we always come back for more!

Black Ops has certainly had it’s share of controversy. Players often find themselves unable to join friends’ parties, being disconnected from matches, and experiencing connection-lag while a game is in progress among other problems associated with their connection to the Black Ops servers. Hard system crashes have also occurred for some players while playing the game. The Playstation Network itself has had its share of woes, recently being ‘invaded’ by a still-undetermined or unnamed source that caused the Network to shut down for several weeks while it went into a rebuilding stage.

Then you have the in-game arguments amongst a majority of the players. All players employ their own strategy or playing style that not everybody agrees with. Sometimes one’s strategy works out better than another’s, and this causes conflict between the players and ill feelings towards the game. A common phrase heard during Black Ops matches is ‘rage-quitting’, an event in which a player becomes so aggravated by the events of the match that he/she is compelled to quit the match while it’s still taking place. Some players, including myself, have become so enraged that they felt the need to turn off the system completely to escape the madness!

Despite the many complaints against Black Ops, most of which I have myself, I find it hard to play anything else. This game includes strategy. You have to use your brain while playing and work together as a team to come out on the winning side of a match. It involves interaction with other human beings, some of which can be very entertaining with strong character-build backing their personalities. Some weapons are downright fun to kill enemies with, and personal achievements are interesting to keep track of. This game is ultimately my #1 form of gaming entertainment right now, and has been this whole year. Despite the moments of pure frustration and connection errors, I love this game! Hence, a love-hate relationship. Call of Duty: Black Ops.
