A diaper cake is adorable, sure, but, if you attend a lot of baby showers because all your friends are having babies, you might get just a little tired of seeing it – even if it is a great gift for the new mom. If you’re the one in charge of creating a fabulous baby shower this time give the mom a terrific gift while doing away with the old baby shower cake. Make her a hoagie and she gets lots of gifts which, when combined, look like a giant sandwich.
There are various things you can buy for the new baby and use to make the hoagie. First, choose one item to make the bread. This item can be a burp cloth, or even a receiving blanket, but should be somewhat large. A cloth which is white makes the perfect hoagie bread but, if the cloth or blanket has a colored trim, that’s okay.
The things you put inside the hoagie is up to you – any number of gifts can be wrapped together to make the sandwich “meat”. Start by laying out a large item, like a hooded bath towel, and maybe even two of them, depending on how large the hoagie bread is. These items will represent the color of the meat. Some colors which work well include pink, tan, or brown. Lay small gifts on the hooded towel, like baby oil, lotion, a bath toy, diapers, baby wash, and similar things. Lay them so that they’re all in a line – even if you have to stack some things on top of others.
Begin with the side of the hooded towel which is facing you and roll it over the gifts. Continue to roll, from one end to the other, until you have a nice “log”. The log should be about half as wide as the hoagie bread.
Lay the burp cloth out so that one of the long sides is facing you. Lay the log on half of the burp cloth – the half that is closest to you. Lay yellow wash cloths on the log to create cheese slices. Position these so that one corner of each washcloth is facing you. Lay some green Easter grass on top of the log to represent lettuce. If you want, cut circles of red felt and lay these on the hoagie to make tomatoes. The new mom can later use these as coasters.
Fold the other half of the burp cloth over the top of the log to finish the sandwich. If it won’t stay together, wrap two ribbons around it, and tape them in place, to divide the sandwich into thirds, and to hold it all together. The giant hoagie is a welcome alternative to the ordinary diaper cake and carries a whole lot of nice gifts that the new mom can surely use.
