Antique Jewelry VS New Jewelry

Since I started my ancestry research; I had found a new passion for antique jewelry that inspired me to list the pros and cons of starting a jewelry collection. I must warn you that my love for history and ancestry are not making me unbiased in my inclination for antique jewelry, but maybe you are also looking for good excuses to start an antique jewelry collection.

Antique jewelry is more likely to be well made, have more attention to detail, have character, and history. I love browsing through pages and pages of unique pieces made by unknown designers; I love their bold details, the texture, thickness; but best of all, I love the Etruscan, Victorian, and also native American designs.

Antique jewelry is more focused on craftsmanship, plus each piece usually comes with history that if told can be quite interesting or you can find jewelry with pictures of unknown people and play detective. I particularly love lockets and take my time browsing through eBay auctions where I can find lockets that are filled with love stories.

A good alternative in antique jewelry are pieces made of sterling silver, this metal is not as expensive as gold jewelry and can very well pass for white gold.

New Jewelry is usually massively produced and as you know, the same pieces are sold everywhere, for example the little diamond heart necklace (you know what I’m taking about right? The one sold for $39.00 on valentines day),the hope rings, the Italian chains, etc. New Jewelry focuses on poor quality diamonds to make things affordable and their modern designs are to smooth and boring, for example: the Tiffany heart necklace.

You can also forget about being annoyed with the idea that you’ll find someone else wearing the same jewelry piece if you purchase antique jewelry, the chances will be very slim.

It is hard to find unique pieces in new jewelry and when you do; they are usually very pricey. The only reason why I would buy new jewelry from a designer is if I think his/her bio has a compelling story that motivates me to buy the piece.

I think at this point I have no doubt that my new jewelry collection will be filled with antique jewelry but whatever you choose to buy; I sure hope that you have a great time doing it and good luck!
