A Predictable U.S. Open?

This edition of the US Open will be a memorable one for for various reasons. Not the least of which is the crowning of a new men’s champion, Djokovic, and underscoring the greatness of a tennis great, Serena.

In my opinion, the changing of the guard on the men’s side will be complete this year, with Federer not winning a major for the first time in a season and Djokovic silencing the critics by claiming back to back Grand Slam title. The women’s side is disappointingly less exciting. The current crop of women’s player has yet to show any sign of one becoming a Great Player. The Serena-Azeranka match was a case in point. A very good player among her peer’s yet Azeraka never threaten to win the match, even though the 2nd set went to a tiebreak.

While i think Djokovic will win the men’s title, i could be proven wrong by 3 players. Federer, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga and Nadal. An interesting match to watch will be the QF between Federer and Tsonga. Nadal has the easier draw and his likely QF opponent, Ferrer, does not have the game to beat him. If he makes it to the final, he has a good chance if Djokovic is not standing on the opposite side of the net. Djokovic’s toughest test should be Federer in the SF. Federer is playing well and being the only person to beat Djokovic this year, he will certainly fancy his chances. The women’s SF draw that is interesting should be a Serena-Wozniacki and Panetta-Lisicki match-ups. Personally, i would like to see a Serena-Lisicki final. Lisicki is an exiting talent. She has the game and is gaining experience. With experience she should be better at shot selection and be more patient. Can she beat Serena? …….highly unlikely.

So, there you have it. Djokovic and Serena to lift the final Grand Slam of the year.
