WWE Smackdown 9-23-11 Results

To open the show, John Laurinitis was in the ring, with a large group of WWE stars standing by the ring in the aisle. Laurinitis said that in Triple H’s absence he assembled the superstars to discuss Triple H losing control of the company. He said that in his opinion, Triple H is actually well in control of the situation. He then introduced the new World Heavyweight Champion, Mark Henry. The superstars parted the crowd to let Henry through. Laurinitis shook Henry’s hand and handed him the microphone. He said that it took him 15 years to earn that title, and it will be 15 more before someone takes it away from him. He then singled out several superstars, calling them out on not believing in him. Suddenly Triple H’s music played and Triple H emerged from the entrance way, heading to the ring. Triple H asked Henry for the microphone, and after a few hesitant moments, Henry handed over the microphone. But before he could get a word out, Christian told him to hold on and came into the ring. Christian told Triple H that he thinks that Triple H is doing a great job as COO, and the way he treats the Smackdown roster with such respect. Christian then said that he is looked upon as the leader of Smackdown, and needed to be the one to express the roster’s feelings. He implied that Henry was not a face the WWE can put on a billboard. Christian then said he deserved one more match for the title, and when Henry chokes at Hell In A Cell, he will pick up the rings and beat Randy Orton for the title. Triple H signaled and angry Mark Henry to back up. Triple H then said that he is in full control of RAW and Smackdown, and then told Christian that as the leader, Christian will be in a lumberjack match tonight against Mark Henry, with the winner facing Randy Orton at Hell In A Cell. As Triple H walked out, Henry stood right behind Christian, who, after turning around, took a few moments to stare Henry down, and then walked out of the ring.

After Sheamus started out the match on the dominant end, Slater turned the tide, bringing Sheamus down with a massive assault by throwing forearms. He tried to tire Sheamus out with a headlock, but when Sheamus powered out, Slater was able to escape Sheamus’s grasp and hit him with a neck breaker. But when Sheamus got to his feet, he took Slater down with a copuple of clotheslines, and nailed Slater with a power slam. Aftera series of maneuvers, Sheamus hit the Brough kick, taking Slater down and pinned him for the win.

After being beaten up and thrown to the outside by Barrett from the start, Gabriel got back into the match by throwing Barrett to the outside and flipping over the ropes onto Barrett. Barrett wasted no time in hitting Gabriel with the Wasteland finisher, and scoring the winning pin.

Winner: Wade Barrett

Christian was shown trying to convince Ezekiel Jackson to help him deal with Mark Henry tonight. When Jackson took offense to Christian’s condescending comments, Christian said that he saw a future champion in Jackson, and would really hope to get his help tonight.

Match 3: AJ & Katlyn v. Beth Phoenix & Natalya

In a fairly short match, AJ launched a very limited offensive against Beth, after Beth and Natalya took turns beating on Katlyn. Winner: Beth Phoenix & Natalya

Match 4: Randy Orton v. Cody Rhodes

After a back and forth start, Cody used his mask to try to get the unfair advantage. After being distracted by the ref, Cody put his mask back on and went after Orton again, but when he tried to kick Orton, his foot was caught and Orton got to his feet, ripping Cody’s mask off his face. He then used that mask to hit Cody in the face, at which point the ref called for the bell, disqualifying Orton. An enraged Orton wasn’t done however, as he threw Cody out to the apron just to DDT him into the ring. Orton, against the pleading of the referees, threw Cody to the outside, and after following him out, Orton hit Cody across the head with the ring bell. Still yet, Orton was not done. He threw Cody on top of the announce table and hit him with an RKO.

Winner: Cody Rhodes (by disqualification)

In the back, Christian approached Sheamus and offered him a potato as a peace offering. He reminded Sheamus of their agreement about giving Sheamus the first match once he is the champion again. Match 5: Ginder Mahal v. The Great Khali

Mahal was outmatched by Khali and escaped to the outside to steer clear of Khali’s grip. When he came back in, he took Khali down after a few kicks and a DDT. Khali didn’t stay down long however as he knocked Mahal down over and over with big punches to the head. Khali then picked up Mahal up in the air, and slammed him down with a front power slam. Khali then put one foot on Mahal’s chest, pinning him for the win.

Winner: The Great Khali

After a couple of minutes into the match, Sin Cara went to the ring apron to jump into the ring onto Bryan, when the other Sin Cara came out, and knocked him off the ropes, to the outside. The second Sin Cara then mounted the ropes and hit Bryan with a flipping Senton splash, pinning him for the win.

Winner: Sin Cara

Match 7: The Usos v. Air Boom

After trying to victimize Bourne for the opening minutes, Usos fell victim to an onslaught from a tagged in Kofi. But when Jimmy Uso bounced Kofi’s throat off the ropes, Jay delivered a kick to the face sending Kofi down. But the Usos comeback was short lived as Kofi kicked out of an attempt pin, and then dodged Jimmy’s attempt at an attack, hitting him with the Trouble In Paradise. Kofi then tagged Bourne who headed to the top ropes and hit the Air Bourne to score the victory for his team.

Winners: Air Boom

Match 8: Christian v. Mark Henry (Lumberjack Match for the World Heavyweight Championship)

Henry dominated Christian, throwing him to the outside where Ezekiel Jackson, instead of helping Christian out, violently threw Christian back into the ring. When Christian was able to get some control, he was unsuccessful in pinning Henry, and then unsuccessful at hitting Killswitch. After being clotheslined to the mat, Chrstian dodged Henry again and came off the middle ropes onto him, flipping over Henry and trying a pin. Henry stood his ground and tried to sit on Christian, but Christian moved. A dazed Henry rolled to the outside, he grabbed Christian’s foot and dragged him to the outside too. At this point, every wrestlers from around ringside assaulted Henry as he fought them all off. Christian looked downright scared and began to back away from the ring, heading up the aisle. But Sheamus then came from the back and grabbed Christian from behind, throwing him into the ring, where Henry was already waiting. Henry quickly picked Christian up, hitting him with the World’s Strongest slam and winning the match. As soon as the bell rang, Randy Orton’s music played and Orton charged to the ring. As he slid in and got to his feet, he and Henry stared each other down, and then the punches flew. Orton landed a few, and then ducked Henry’s, hitting the champion with a powerful standing drop kick, hard enough to send Henry tumbling under the ropes to the outside. A surprised Henry stared Orton down from the outside, but instead of coming back into the ring, just raised his championship belt over his head.
