Wild Card Doesn’t Alter Chase Contenders, Could Alter Title

Remember how NASCAR spiced things up this season with the addition of the Wild Card spots for the final two drivers in the Chase? Well, it did not make a difference this season. Brad Keselowski was 11th in the standings and Denny Hamlin was 12th. Brad had 3 wins and Denny had a victory, so those two locked up the final two spots.

With only three races to go Tony Stewart sits 8 points behind Carl Edwards. Kevin Harvick and Brad Keselowski are 21 and 27 points behind, respectively. However, under the Wild Card rules, Brad and Denny both made the Chase, but did not get the three bonus points that the top ten drivers received for each of their victories. Kyle Busch started the Chase with 12 bonus points. Brad Keselowski started with zero.

Nine points may not seem like a big deal, but with three races to go, Brad would be in third position and only 18 points behind Carl Edwards. How loud are NASCAR fans going to scream if Brad loses the title by less than nine points? As if NASCAR fans need a reason to scream! The Wild Card could be in for some changes before next season depending on how these last three races go.
