When the Money Just Isn’t There

There may be times in life when you find yourself in need of financial assistance. You may be between jobs or searching for a better paying one. You may be temporarily laid off or short on hours. You may just need a little extra to get you through a tough time. There are ways to get help! With a few phone calls and a little asking, you can get what you need to help you through.

Red Cross and United Way

Both the Red Cross and United Way can offer a variety of types of emergency assistance. They can help offer you food and toiletries. Many branches can help you apply for various types of aid. They can also help guide you to food, baby and personal needs pantries in your county. These are the two agencies it is best to start with in any emergency – physical, financial or other type of situation.

Food Pantries

Many counties and communities offer food pantries for low-income families. Most don’t have any minimum requirements. They simply work off the honor system. You usually go and fill out a form with some basic information and then are given food based from that information. You usually get a variety of items, from canned goods to produce to cereal and many other food items. It’s a good idea to bring your own boxes or bags to the pantries, as they are often in limited supply.

Government Assistance

The government has numerous programs to help people in need. For food assistance, you can apply for a Bridge Card. For those with someone who is pregnant or with a new baby in the household, there is WIC. Most states have SSD or SSI, which offer financial assistance for low-income or disabled people. There is also insurance called Medicaid that is offered through the government. Visit your local Department of Human Services office to find out what kind of help you are eligible for.

Churches

Many churches offer financial assistance out of a special fund. Usually the only way to get help is to call or stop in and talk to a church leader. Most churches are likely to pay a specific bill rather than just handing over money. Be prepared to ask for something specific. Know what you need the most help with before you make contact. Some churches also provide food or personal needs items. Call around to churches in your area to see if they can help.

Yard Sales and Other Used Goods

You can find things in surprisingly good condition at places like yard sales and Goodwill. If you search, you will discover anything from clothes, to appliances, to items for children and babies. You simple have to weed through the junk, and you can find treasure. If you don’t have time to go searching around, you can also try Craigslist, eBay or other online shopping sites. There you will find people that are selling items, and often you can find good deals.
