What Should Have Been

“Is your mother home?” the man asked the little girl at her front door.

“No, she went to the neighbor’s.” She stared back at him with large, trusting eyes.

He glanced at the open book on the couch. Eight years old, and reading a book meant for fifth graders.

“I’ll try to reach her on the phone,” he turned quickly before she could see his tears.

As he sat in the front seat of his car, he saw his ex-wife coming out of another house. A man ran out after her and grabbed her, pulling her in for another kiss.
