To start a business in Salt Lake City, you need to register your business with the State of Utah and apply for a business license from Salt Lake City. You can register with the State of Utah online, but in Salt Lake City you have to apply for a business license in person. In addition to a business license, certain types of businesses need special licenses and permits.

To register with the State of Utah, you can use the OneStop Business Registration online. This online registration applies to all types of entities, including sole proprietorships, general partnerships, limited partnerships, limited liability partnerships and companies, and corporations, including profit and non-profit and professional corporations. The online system registers your business with the Utah State Tax Commission, Labor Commission, Department of Commerce, Department of Workforce Services, and the Department of Environmental Quality.

To register online you will need the proposed name of your business, the type of business entity, such as sole proprietorship, limited liability company, corporation, etc., your business location, the type of activity you will be carrying out, the date you will open the business and the date you will start paying wages, if applicable, and the names, contact information, and taxpayer ID numbers of the owners, partners, corporate officers, and principals. They can sign most business registrations electronically. Most businesses will also need a federal employer identification number, which you request from the IRS.

The fee for online registration with the State of Utah is from $22 to $52. This is the filing fee for the Utah Department of Commerce and the Division of Corporations and Commercial Code.
