Volunteering is My First Name

What occurred on 9/11 has changed my life, drastically. I am closer with my family and I appreciate them more. I was in the 8th grade when the incident occurred but I remember it very well. I remember crying while watching the coverage on the news and learning of the thousands of victims. My heart sank, however what occurred on that day has made me the woman I am, today.

Today, I spend more time with my family than friends and colleagues. I value them. I could not imagine losing any more relatives, let alone to something such as a terrorist attack. I’d be furious! Also, since 9/11, I’ve volunteered 1,000+ hours in my community. I help instill hope inside the hearts of young children and I help to encourage them by meeting with different students at numerous elementary and high schools and eating lunch with them, or telling and showing them that nothing is impossible, no matter who doubts them. We are our biggest critics! I realize that not everyone come from a supportive, caring family. Letting them know that I care about them gives them a feeling of existence.

I’ve also learned to cherish my life, even more. I was Miss Arkansas Black International, last year. I was appointed and was very appreciative and humble because there aren’t very many known Black state queens. I instilled confidence inside a lot of people because I had the courage to do what many females dream of doing, but are afraid. I love helping others in any way that I can. So, since 9/11 I’ve learned the value of life, the value of caring, the value of giving (not always with money), and the value of family!

Sending blessings to the victims’ families and friends…
