Upcycle Stretch Hats or Caps into Pillows

Old stocking caps and other stretch hats are a dime a dozen at thrift stores. Turn those unwanted hats into unique upcycled pillows. Add character to any location with these round hat pillows. Allow 15 minutes to complete each pillow.

Things You’ll Need:

Stretch hat or cap
Hand sewing needle
Buttonhole thread
Fiberfill
Optional – 1 ½- to 2-inch button

Instructions:

Step 1 – Thread a hand sewing needle with 3-feet of buttonhole thread. Match the ends of the thread and tie a knot.

Step 2 – Insert the tip of the needle along the brim of the hat. Pull the thread through the hat until approximately 6-inch remains to the knot. Allow this piece of thread to dangle.

Step 3 – Weave the needle back and forth through the stitching along the brim of the hat.

Step 4 – Pull the needle and the knot toward you and gather the edge of the hat along the length of the buttonhole thread. Pull the thread until there is a hole approximately 3-inches in diameter.

Step 5 – Stuff the hat pillow with fiberfill.

Step 6 – Pull the thread until the hole closes. Tie off the thread. Hide the ends of the thread inside the pillow.

Optional: Sew a 1 ½- to 2-inch button in the center of the pillow. Sculpt the pillow by inserting the needle through the center back, through the button on the front of the pillow then down through the center back. Pull the thread tight and knot.
