Troublshooting BootMii Installations on Nintendo Wii Consoles

BootMii software is created for Wii Homebrew users who want alternate ways to access the Homebrew Channel, back up software and reinstall their previous versions of the Wii system menu. Newer Nintendo Wii consoles have prevented the installation of the BootMii as startup software and only allows it as an IOS installation.

IOS Installations

An IOS is the operating software on a Wii that features the System Menu and the interface to select games and other Wii applications. When BootMii can only install on the IOS of the Wii, it means that software cannot be accessed before the Wii console loads its original software. This means that the BootMii cannot be fully used to start the Wii and restore corrupted software.

Wii Compatibility

Any Wii made after the year 2008 will not be able to install BootMii on anything other than the IOS. Nintendo placed a block on the Wii software to prevent the “boot2″ configuration from being changed or customized.

This is not because the BootMii software is illegal, but since it is used to prevent the burning or playing of pirated Wii games. Check the serial number of your Wii with the Wii Drive Chip website to find the exact year your console was manufactured.

IOS Selection

When installing BootMii on the IOS, you must select the correct one or your Wii will freeze during the installation process. Plug a Gamecube controller into one of the four ports on the top of the console. Use the D-pad to scroll and select IOS 236.

This will properly install BootMii on the correct IOS and allow it to run through the Homebrew Channel. All of the functions will work the same in BootMii except for the preboot option to load BootMii instead of the standard Wii menu.

Priiloader Installation
If you cannot install BootMii without the IOS, then there is an alternate software you can use. The homebrew software Priiloader uses several of the same functions as BootMii and includes backup capabilities like Wii system menu restoration.

Once downloaded from the Wii Brew Website, Priiloader installs through the Homebrew channel and can be activated to load before the Wii system menu actually loads. This will work on the majority of Wii consoles including ones produced past 2008.
