Have a race car theme happening in your boy’s room? Maybe a baby doll theme for your girl’s bedroom? It’s fun to hang curtains, buy bed covers, and put down rugs, with a chosen theme. No matter what theme you have in the bedroom of your child you can add yet another accent when you redo the bedroom light switch. In fact, if you go looking in a child’s toy box you can quickly find a toy that will look fabulous as a light switch. Make a car switch, a doll switch, or another; it’s fun and really easy.
The perfect light switch for making the race car, or other toy accent, is one that is flat, with a wide switch. The switch should be one that is pushed at the top to turn the light on, and pushed at the bottom to turn it off. Paint it black or gray for a race car theme, or even pink for a doll theme. For a race track, make a solid yellow line on one side by using yellow electrical tape, or even a paint marker.
If you’re making a doll-theme switch cover you don’t want the switch plate to look like a race track. Instead, glue or tape on a theme piece of scrapbook paper, or even stamp the plate with doll-theme images. Or, make stripes on it with colored tape.
After you’re finished making the switch cover look the way you want, you can then add the car or other toy as the switch. A car can be nearly any type; it can be really small or much larger. For the best look, though, the car shouldn’t be bigger than the light switch plate or “road”. A good choice is a car that is lightweight. If you’re using a doll, her head and feet should not reach beyond the top and bottom of the switch plate.
Use Velcro to hold the toy to the light switch. Put one piece on the upper part of the switch and one on the lower part. Hold the toy up to the plate to look for the coinciding spot on the back of the toy. Stick the opposing Velcro pieces to two places on the back of the toy. The child will just move the car or other toy, up and down, to turn the light on and off.
