Topical Home Remedies for Ringworm

Ringworm is a common type of fungal infection that affects the skin or scalp. It is relatively easy to catch if you spend any time in public swimming pools, gym locker rooms or any other warm, moist environment which multiple people share. If you notice those itchy, ring-like red marks on your skin, do not worry. Home remedies for ringworm can be very helpful for eliminating this skin infection. Because ringworm is contagious through skin on skin contact or contact through shared items that touch your skin, such as towels or exercise equipment, do be careful not to expose anyone else.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is one of the best topical remedies for fungal infections on the skin, such as ringworm and athletes foot. It has excellent anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Simply dab tea tree oil directly onto the affected area two to three times a day. If your skin is sensitive, dilute with clean water. Be sure to wash your hands after touching infected skin. Using a soap that contains tea tree can also help control the ringworm on your body.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Another simple, yet effective home remedy for ringworm is apple cider vinegar. Dab onto the skin with a clean cotton cloth and allow to air dry. The vinegar smell will go away after a few minutes. Apple cider vinegar, like tea tree oil, will help to combat any microbes on the skin.

Epsom Salt Baths

Epsom salt baths are usually recommended for easing muscle aches, but they can also benefit the skin. Epsom salts are magnesium sulfate crystals. Soaking in warm water with one to two cups of these crystals will help to rid the skin of unwanted fungi and bacteria. For a relaxing bath and a little extra anti-fungal activity, add seven drops of lavender essential oil to the bath water. Lavender also has anti-fungal properties.

All three of these home remedies for ringworm are easy to use at home. They will not work overnight, but with at least two weeks of consistent use they can help. There are also over-the-counter anti-fungal creams that you can use. For faster healing, try to eat a healthy diet to boost your immune system while using topical remedies. Focus on eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and avoiding sugary foods, white flour products and soda. If your ringworm does not clear up, be sure to see your doctor. They can prescribe medications if necessary.
