Top 10 Winter Beauty Mistakes to Avoid and Tips to Fix Them

Winter brings changes in the weather which also affects our body, especially our skin. Harsh temperatures, biting cold winds, and a lower humidity all play a role in the skin’s performance, which also affects your makeup and beauty routine. Here are my top ten beauty mistakes to avoid during the winter months and how to avoid them.

Winter Beauty Mistake No. 1 and 2: Skipping moisturizer and sun protection factor during day

Even though it is winter, you should still protect your skin with a good moisturizer with a sun protection factor. Sure, you aren’t going to get sunburned, but the sun still contains damaging ultraviolet rays and your skin should be protected. Tip No. 1: Always use daytime moisturizer in winter, Tip No. 2: Select a moisturizer with SPF of 15 or 20 minimum.

Winter Beauty Mistake No. 3: Skipping moisturizer at night

Speaking of moisturizer, you should also apply moisturizer at night. Your skin has less moisture during the winter months due to low humidity. Your skin needs moisture to stay healthy and bright. Tip No. 3: Always use nighttime moisturizer

Winter Beauty Mistake No. 4: Using a liquid foundation with dry or very dry skin

You may need to change your foundation if you use a liquid foundation and find your skin drier than usual, even if you use moisturizers on a regular basis. Liquid foundation does not look good over dry skin and will look “cracked” when the dry skin starts flaking and peeling. Try a powder based mineral foundation instead. Tip No. 4: Switch from a liquid foundation to mineral based powder foundation.

Winter Beauty Mistake No. 5: Switch to a lighter shade of foundation

Another foundation mistake is using the same shade you use during the summer. Your skin is not as dark or tanned in the winter, so you will need to lighten up the foundation shade for the winter months. Tip No. 5: Go to a lighter shade of foundation for winter to look more natural.

Winter Beauty Mistake No. 6: Don’t soak in a hot tub of water

Did you know that soaking in a hot tub for prolonged periods of time also depletes your skin’s moisture? A hot soak in the tub or a hot shower is especially welcome in the cold winter months, but it also aids in drying out your skin. Try to get in and out of the bath or shower as quickly as possible and do not use very hot water, stick to warm water. Tip No. 6: Do not stay in a hot bath or shower for prolonged periods of time.

Winter Beauty Mistake No. 7: You don’t need extra moisture during the winter (so wrong!)

Always use a body lotion after your bath to help restore the moisture in your skin. Body butter is also a good choice. Tip No. 7: Use body lotion or body butter after baths.

Winter Beauty Mistake No. 8: Not pampering your hands

Your hands are always exposed to the elements of the weather and take an extra hard beating. Keep a good brand of hand lotion by your kitchen sink or one on your desk at work and use it throughout the day. Pamper away! Tip No. 8: Use hand lotion all day.

Winter Beauty Mistake No. 9: Not paying attention to your cuticles

Cuticles are extra dry in the winter and more prone to splitting and cracking. Use a cuticle cream as often as necessary to keep cuticles soft and moisturized. An infected cuticle is painful and easy to avoid! Tip No. 9: Use cuticle cream 2x week.

Winter Beauty Mistake No. 10: Forgetting the feet

Ever get dry and cracked skin on your feet? The skin covering your feet needs extra moisture too during the cold winter months. Tip No. 10: Try applying a lotion or body butter at night before putting on socks for the night. The extra moisture will help keep skin from cracking and peeling and getting sore.

I hope this list of common beauty mistakes to avoid during the winter and my tips for avoiding them are helpful to you. Winter calls for a little more attention to our skin and a little extra time is all that is needed to make your skin shine with a healthy glow.
