Tips for Family Ski Vacations

Unless we manage to get away alone for the weekend, my husband and I usually have our little ones in tow for our ski trips. While the whole family has a blast, it can make for one challenging trip.

Here are some tips on taking a ski vacation with your family:

Shop around for your lift tickets

Tons of resorts offer free lift tickets for children as old as 6. Others will charge $5-$10, but even that’s too much when neighboring resorts offer them for free. You should also be on the lookout for “Family Interchangeable Tickets.” These tickets allow you to just pay for one adult. These are for when one parent has to stay behind with the little ones while the other tackles the slopes. Mom and dad take turns using the ticket, and only one of you can use it at a time.

Recommendation: Check out resort websites for extra discounts on regular tickets. You can usually find some great deals, including buy-one-get-one free.

Dress kids sensibly

You know as soon as you put your children in those warm one-piece garments, they will be asking to go to the bathroom. As a mom who is in the middle of potty-training, trust me when I say you don’t want a potty accident out there. Avoid this hassle by dressing them in warm, layered sets. Don’t forget well-fitting mittens and helmets with ear pads.

Go for family-style lodging

Our family never settles for a simple Motel 6 room during our ski vacations. The lifts close too early, and you will drive yourselves crazy being stuck in a cramped room for so long. We always find a two-room suite to stay in that offers a sleeper sofa and two separate TVs. It is an ideal arrangement, great for your peace of mind and the slight extra cost is worth it.

Look for family activities at the resort

We have been very lucky to visit many great resorts that offer so much for children. You can often find kid camps, daycare or babysitting resources, playgrounds, ski lessons and so much more. What’s even better is when you can find family events that are going on after the lifts close. You can catch a quick dinner and have some fun. Shop around to find out what each resort in the area is offering. We once went to a resort that played children’s movies every night. My boys loved it.
