Tips for Capturing Perfect Thanksgiving Dinner Photos

One of my favorite activities to do on Thanksgiving day is take pictures of my family, friends and all the food. To make your Thanksgiving dinner memories last forever, here are some tips on capturing the beauty of your turkey feast.

1. Use natural light when taking pictures.
When I take pictures of my Thanksgiving Day dishes, I use natural because it creates soft highlights and shadows that bring out all the details of the food. So to make your food look really mouthwatering, place it near a sunny window with a white or sheer curtain to diffuse the light and then position it so that the light is coming from one and a little behind the plate.

2. Enhance photos by shooting from different angles.
If you really want to enhance your photos, shoot from different angles. Shooting from above the food creates a really cool dramatic look, while shooting it while sitting in front of it replicates what you see when you sit down to dinner. Another angle that I like to shoot from is below because it emphasizes height which shows off how big my turkey and side dishes are.

3. Make Thanksgiving dishes look gourmet with garnishes.
If you’ve ever notice in professional food photographs, the dishes always has some type of garnish. Not only does it make the food look gourmet but it also makes it look fresh and inviting. So consider adding a sprinkle of herbs or little bit of cream to your dishes to make them look picture perfect.

4. Look at the bigger picture.
Once you’ve got everything in place, take a step back and survey the scene before snapping a picture. This will give you an opportunity to look at the bigger picture and see if there anything that might be distracting or need to be taken off the table. You might not want a can of soda or a bag of chips sitting next to your turkey in the picture. When I take a picture of my Thanksgiving spread, I always make sure there is nothing distracting in the background that would take away from the photo. Sometimes I have to rearrange a few pieces of furniture or remove some items but its worth it when the picture comes out perfect.

There’s a lot of hard work that goes into making a Thanksgiving dinner. So what better way to capture your masterpiece, than by taking photos. Once Thanksgiving has passed, you still be able to reminisce on the delicious meal you created for family and friends.
