The Terror of a Single Mother

It all starts off as a happy childbirth, a miracle happening in her life. She is overwhelmed by the happiness of bringing a baby boy in this world, of becoming a mother, the last step towards being a woman. She sees her child as the most important thing in the Universe and he becomes her reason to live and to fight the hardships of everyday life.

In a poor society, a single mother is like a black slave on an all white ship. She works on whatever she finds and for whatever sum in order to put food on the table everyday for her beloved child. She starves if she must, giving everything she has to her baby boy.

Time passes and her baby boy becomes a teenager. She is struggling more and more for his education, working to keep him in school and to give him pocket money as all of his friends get. Obviously most of his friends get more money than him, have better homes, nicer clothes and he starts realizing that he is living quite a poor life. His anger sparks.

He wants more money, saying that he deserves more, he wants a mobile phone, as everyone has one, he wants to live the life that his wealthier mates live. He goes to his mother demanding more and more until she finally tells him that they can’t afford it. That’s when his anger kicks him out of the house. He once heard of a gang which came from zero to living on their own and that’s where he heads. When he arrives at their place, he is attacked and beaten up so bad that he loses consciousness. He wakes up on a sidewalk far from where he remembers he was, soaked in blood and with his goods stolen. His anger intensifies.

He arrives home and finds his desperate mother crying and asking him “What happened to you? Where have you been? Why were you out all night? What’s with all of the blood on your clothes?” Hearing all of this, the frustrated boy looks at her with fire in his eyes, shouts “Shut up!” and punches his mother in the nose, breaking it. She can’t believe what’s happening. Her beloved boy just punched her and is now packing a bag with some clothes, takes all of the money which he can find and walks out of the door feeling no remorse. She feels as if she lived for nothing, and starts crying. And she cries…

After a couple of weeks newspapers’ headlines say “Teenager in jail for murder” and “Woman found hung”.
