Early Days and Growing Up

Gaga is left handed and started to learn the piano when she was four years old, writing her first piano ballad at age thirteen and her first performance was when she was fourteen. From the age of eleven, Gaga attended the all girls Roman Catholic School, Convent of The Sacred Heart on Manhattans Upper East Side.

Early acting roles in high school included lead roles as Adelaide in Guys and Dolls and Philia in A Funny Thing Happened on The Way to The Forum. Gaga was a good student and her main love was music.

After high school at the age of seventeen, Gaga was admitted to the New York University’s Tisch School of Arts and lived like most students in a dorm on 11th Street. Tisch gave Gaga the opportunity to study music and develop her songwriting skills. She focused on topics such as politics, religion, art and social issues. Gaga knew she was more creative and needed something more challenging so she withdrew from school in her second year to concentrate on her musical career.

Early Career

When only nineteen years old, Gaga signed with Def Jam records but was dropped after only three months. Shortly after she was introduced to songwriter and producer RedOne and they produced “Boys Boys Boys”, recorded a couple of songs with hip hop artist Grand Master Melle for the children’s audio book The Portal In The Park by Cricket Casey. During this period she formed the Stefani Germanotte band and performed in the club scene of the Lower East Side of Manhattan. In 2007 Gaga started working with Lady Starlight at club venues like Rockwood Music Hall, Mercury Lounge and The Bitter End. The act was known as Lady Gaga and The Starlight Revue. Some believe Gaga’s career really started in August 2007 when she played the Lollapalooza Music Festival and got some good reviews.

Music producer Rob Fusari helped Gaga write some of her early songs and sent some of their co-produced work to Vincent Herbert who signed Gaga to Streamline Records, an imprint of Interscope Records. Gaga has worked with Sony/ATV music publishing, writing songs for Britney Spears, New Kids on the Block, Fergie and the Pussycat Dolls. While writing for other labels Akon noticed her vocal abilities and signed a joint deal between Interscope and Akon’s record label Kon Live Distribution. The next step for Gaga was joining the roster of Cherrytree Records, who include such artists as The Police, Colette Carr and La Roux. Here she started co-writing songs for her first album with producer and songwriter Martin Kierszenbaum.
