The Real (LeSean) McCoy

With all the hoopla surrounding the Philadelphia Eagles’ free agent acquisitions, Michael Vick’s $100M contract and DeSean Jackson’s hold out, many forgot about running back LeSean McCoy.

Obviously, Fantasy Football players know all about #25 and he provided them with a superb statistical day. On the ground, he had 122 yards with a rushing TD and receiving he only had 2 receptions for 15 yards, but did catch a TD.

McCoy is blossoming into the next Brian Westbrook; a dual threat on the ground and through the air. The Eagles drafted the Pitt Panther for just this role and after being mentored by Westbrook his rookie year he has nicely developed into a solid back since 2010 Opening Day. LeSean still has to improve his blitz pick-up but any coach will always implore that of any running back.

As an Eagles’ fan, Fantasy owner or just an observant football fan, you should keep your eye on McCoy. The Eagles’ offensive line still has issues and Vick is known to garner contact from defenders. Vick is only getting older and got hurt last year. If Michael Vick gets knocked around, McCoy will see an increased role in this offense. There is no Kevin Kolb or Donovan McNabb in Philly anymore, simply Mike Kafka on the bench.

Even if Vick stays healthy, performances like Week 1 will only increase Andy Reid’s trust in him and lead to an increase in touches. McCoy has shown he can run for over 1,000 yards and be a solid pass-catcher. He may never grab the attention of Brian Westbrook, but he will be a contributor for the Eagles for years to come.

So remember, even though many headlines flock to Michael Vick, DeSean Jackson, Nnamdi Asomugha and others, do not forget about that 5′ 11″ back who slips through defenders and into the top of the box score.
