The New Hot Pants: How to Wear Bold, Colorful Jeans

The magazines all have them. Every star on television has flaunted them. You even considered buying a pair. But something about wearing Crayola inspired pants seemed just a little bit too intimidating. Oh sure, they look super stylish on the Klum’s and Giselle’s, but what about the average American girl? Just when you thought this trend was going to fade quickly (like last year’s harem pant,) these statement-making items were seen all over the runway for Spring and Summer 2012. It’s official: brightly colored pants and jeans are here through the rest of the year, so it’s time to muster that charm school confidence and give them a try. How, you ask? It’s actually pretty simple.

Go Big or Go Home.

This trend is an all or nothing kind of deal, but either way works beautifully. Pair your neon jeans with a simple white, gray or black; neutrals diffuse the shock factor of day-glo pants and make them office appropriate at the same time. Conversely, color-blocking is the new way to be on trend, so you can pair those same pants with an equally bright blouse in a complimentary color. Add bright stilettos or a bold purse and you’re guaranteed to be noticed. Nordstrom has a wide selection of colors in both jean, pant, and jegging styles at all price points. (See? You don’t have to break the bank for these babies.)

Make A Night of It.

To take this trend from day to night, pair your colorful new pants with a lightweight blazer and tank combo. It instantly adds a bit of polish to the look, and you won’t have to spend another dime on a trendy piece to go with it. White House Black Market carries blazers in basic colors, like the Elysee Peplum for $148. Add a long necklace for more drama and you’ve got yourself an outfit that works for sushi with the girls or a romantic dinner date.

What’s Your Favorite Color?

It should go without saying that the best way to wear this trend is to pick a color (or colors, if you are trying out a few,) that you love and love on you. If you know you look like a tomato in red, opt for a lovely coral or pink instead. (Try this berry colored version at Urban Outfitters.) Yellow and green are also not for the faint of heart, so go with darker blues or purples. If skinny jeans scare you, opt for a flare-leg version in a color that will make you smile each time you peruse your closet. Wearing a favorite color has been proven to lift a person’s mood, and who doesn’t want to feel happier?Just remember that the world doesn’t have to be black, white, and shades of gray. Go for it!
