The Mystic Archives of Dantalian Episode Seven “The Perfumer”–Recap

In this episode, we are back to Huey and Dalian. The episode begins with a conversation between the kid version of Huey and the mysterious girl inside the archive. She tells him that he should leave before he loses his soul to the archive, but Huey wants her to come with him. He tells her the door is unlocked and reaches out a hand to her. The girl in the archive tells him that the archive is her world, and that she does not need or want to leave it. Huey doesn’t believe her, because he offers to take her away on an airplane. (This is a very cute statement, I think.) He continues to try convincing her to leave with him, but he’s drowned out by a voice over of the girl saying that she had never really felt anything, until she had met the boy. Then we go to the opening credits.

When we get back from the opening credits, we see an exchange between criminals at a crime scene, one of whom is addicted to some kind of inhalant in a perfume bottle. One of the criminals states that he plans on finding out the “recipe” of the drug that the other criminal is using. We get a very sinister view of the criminal and then we go to the next scene.

Huey and Dalian are in line outside of a bakery, and Dalian is extremely impatient. This particular bakery produces the best buns ever, and chances are good that they might run out before Dalian can get to the counter. (I am reminded of the Krispy Kreme donut fad.) Dalian gets her buns, but they are interrupted by a young woman who sniffs Huey and declares that he must be a nice person. The odd young woman asks for Huey’s help, stating that people are chasing her. Dalian is not impressed, or very sympathetic to the young woman’s plea. She is even less sympathetic when the men chasing the young woman (whose name is apparently Fiona) turn up, and Fiona runs off, stealing the buns. Huey decides to be a gentleman and blocks the men pursuing Fiona. Unfortunately, Fiona trips, which causes the buns to go sailing through the air. Dalian is horrified.

In the next scene, Huey is talking to Fiona’s father, whose company produces perfumes and women’s cosmetics. Fiona’s dad is apologizing for her behavior, but Huey doesn’t mind since the dad bought new buns for Dalian. Fiona Famenias is apparently a very gifted if somewhat “tomboyish” young woman. Her talent lies in creating perfumes. We learn that the Famenias family has a connection to a mysterious, and the current keeper of the book is apparently Fiona.

While they are talking, they are interrupted by a servant who informs Mr. Famenias that someone from the “Padauk” firm has arrived. We get a brief shot of Huey, who apparently recognizes the name and does not like it. Famenias excuses himself, and Huey gets up to go as well. Huey makes a request to meet with Fiona again, and the scene shifts to Huey and Dalian being escorted to Fiona’s home and workshop. On the way there, Huey explains that the Padauk firm is involved in criminal activities such as blackmail, smuggling and the opium trade.

Huey and Dalian talk to Fiona, who reveals that her sense of smell is so acute that she can figure out what people are really thinking or feeling from their scent. (Actually, Huey does most of the talking. Dalian gets distracted by a very friendly civet cat.) She also reveals that her particular obsession is creating a perfume that will make people happy. She apparently has a very strained relationship with her father because of a line of perfume that he decided to sell over her objections.

Huey and Dalian request to see the book, but they are interrupted by someone knocking on the door. (And it is not Avon calling.) They go to the door, and there is a unhinged junkie at the door, demanding to be given something called “Relic.” Fiona wants to know how the junkie knows about Relic, but the addict would rather provide some exposition–the Padauk firm is making a move against Mr. Famenias. Fiona runs back to her father’s home.

When they reach Mr. Famenias’ office there is someone waiting there for them; the criminal type from the beginning of the episode. He’s an assassin working with the leader of the Padauk firm, a man named Vance. They have come to steal the recipe for a perfume called “Relic” which is actually an extremely addictive drug. Huey immediately steps forward to protect Fiona, and tells her to run. This results in a fight scene between Huey and the hit man. The fight ends with the hit man charging at Huey, but Fiona jumps between them, getting stabbed in the process. She hits the hit man with a bottle of perfume. This particular perfume overloads the senses. The hit man falls over, screaming with pain. She nails the other guy with a perfume that acts as a hypnotic.

Huey and Dalian bring out a Phantom Book to heal Fiona. Once healed, Fiona comes to some kind of resolution, sprays Huey with the hypnotic and then runs off. It turns out that Fiona has decided to take out the Padauk firm using her more deadly perfumes. She does a really good job, and is extremely successful, but is fatally wounded. (And they are not able to heal her a second time.) We end with a view of Fiona’s home-workshop, which is burning. There is a sad conversation, and then we go to the closing credits.

In the next episode, One of Huey’s friends makes a series of trades using the Book of Equivalence and another friend gets on the wrong side of a jealous girlfriend and the Book of Relationships.
