The Mysterious Lovelock Cave Mummies

Ancient Paiute Indian legend tells us of a rival tribe of giants that spoke a separate language and who had red hair, fair skin and a taste for human flesh. Known as the Si-Te-Cah, the Paiute Indians went about annihilating the entire Si-Te-Cah race. The few surviving members are said to have retreated into a cave where the Paiute Indians set fire to it by piling up brush and shooting fire-tipped arrows into the cave.

Anyone who tried to escape was immediately shot and killed by the Paiute. And this was how the extermination of the Si-Te-Cah by the Paiute ended.

Then, in 1911, guano miners discovered several mysterious looking mummies with red hair measuring from six and a half feet to over eight feet tall. Believed by some to be 9,000 years old, the mummies were unearthed in Lovelock cave located in the state of Nevada. They were found amongst many artifacts and what appeared to be some kind of burnt material.

Scientists at the time were alerted for an investigation but for some unknown reason they were unwilling to do anything about the unusual findings. This led to most of the evidence of bones and artifacts to be discarded or destroyed.

Some locals at the time came to the site to salvage what was left, but in an unfortunate twist, most of what was saved later burned in an accidental fire. Only a few skulls and some artifacts remain.

At almost one foot tall one of the Lovelock cave skulls, along with additional bones and artifacts, are preserved in the Humboldt County Museum in Winnemucca, Nevada and the Nevada State Historical Society’s museum in Reno.

To add to the intrigue, in 1931 and 1939 several more large, human remains were unearthed in the vicinity of Lovelock cave. The skeletons measured from seven feet seven inches to almost ten feet tall.
