The Anemic United Nations

The Anemic United Nations

Since the inception of the United Nations following the travesty of WWII the continued ineptitude of this international body is mind boggling! In defense of this organization, the group was never given any real ability to act on a particular problem due to the watering down of their authority by the International Court of Justice (ICJ.

The recent debacle in Syria and the surge of the Syrian Army into Homs, Syria is a direct result of the lack of leadership and inability to enforce UN resolutions. This body was formed to aid in the peaceful resolution of international strife between nations (or states) and has almost always fallen short, usually at the cost of human lives. With some 50 people slaughtered and scores injured during this assault on Homs over the weekend and the humanitarian situation is bleak. The lack of medical facilities and medicine are among the scarcest in this region.

Bashar al-Assad’s ruthless grip on this country is formidable and is backed by enormous support from inside Syria as well as externally. The United Nations Security Council has indicated support for the Syrian President from Russia. You think UN? Russia has been marginalized in the region and is throwing in with this regime to make certain their hold is secure, vicariously through Syria’s Government’s military and oil contracts. We are talking huge losses for Russia and a multi-billion dollar gamble on their part.

The UN Security Council should be re-evaluated immediately, striped of its duties and then reassembled to incorporate those countries with the means and fortitude to enforce international law and humanitarian aid. The G8 organization would be a good body to place this burden upon. The communication and infrastructure is in position and could act almost immediately, given the authority by those involved. If this means the G8 would violate sovereign countries borders and laws to complete the mission, so be it!

This may sound like a radical idea but the severity of the situation is more dyer now than when the League of Nations failed for the same reasons of ineptitude prior to 1945. The need at that time was clear and it is clear presently in 2012. The UN is no longer able to carry out its programs on the scale of that which plagues not only Syria but the entire Middle East. The likes of Russia and other Nations that have fundamental flaws in their philosophy or have altered motives should recuse themselves or be barred from participation of this proposed organization.
