Thanksgiving Turkey Nut Cups

It’s hard to say what the best part of Thanksgiving is. Some would say the turkey and others would say the delicious desserts. Ask another person and he or she might say that being around family and friends is the very best part of the holiday. But, actually, it’s all good. It’s fun to visit those you haven’t seen in awhile, partake of the scrumptious foods, and it’s even exciting to decorate for Thanksgiving. Surely one of your guests this year will say the best part was the delightful little turkeys – who gave out nuts – was the best part of the holiday. They’re just irresistible, the little turkeys with feathers, so they’re perfect for giving out as favors or just as treats.

There are different ways you can make the nut cup turkeys. One way is to use a small, disposable cup. Color it with a brown marker or even wrap a piece of a brown paper bag around it. The cup will be the body of the turkey and the part that holds the nuts. One side of the turkey will become the face.

Use sections cut from a cardboard egg carton to make a slightly different turkey. Cut the cup out of the carton, and cut around one of the stubs inside the carton, so that you remove one egg section, and one stub attached to it. The stub, when bent downwards, makes the turkey’s face.

You can create a face for the turkey cup by using your choice of craft supplies. Use wiggly eyes from a craft store or just paint on the eyes. Make a tiny cone for a beak or just paint a yellow triangle shape for the beak. A wattle can be made from a piece of yarn, construction paper, a red pipe cleaner piece, or even craft foam.

Most craft stores sell two different types of feathers. One type, often used to make Indian headwear, is long and stiff. The other type is soft and wispy. The second type makes the perfect feathers for your Thanksgiving turkey cups. Just choose a few short feathers and staple or tape them to an area on the cup, opposite the face.

If the nut cups will also be serving as the place markers, fill the cup with nuts, then make a toothpick name sign. Cut a long, slender piece of paper, fold it in half, position one end of the toothpick against the fold, then glue or tape the paper shut. Write a name on the sign and stick the end of the toothpick in amongst the nuts to stand.

It’s really fun and easy to make turkey nut cups for your Thanksgiving guests. The cups will be just one of the things remembered from this year’s dinner. Although they’re especially nice for the kids’ table, they can actually be served to all your guests.
