South Florida 9/11 Remembrance Events

South Floridians are planning to remember the events of 9/11 in many ways, from the sporting to the sacred.

From now to November 6, 2011 in Miami…
In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, Miami Art Museum presents “Focus Gallery: Joel Meyerowitz – Aftermath,” an exhibition of photographs taken by the only photographer granted right of entry into Ground Zero after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City.

For nine months during the day and night, Meyerowitz photographed “the pile,” as the World Trade Center came to be known, and the over 800 people a day that were working in it. The exhibition consists of 24, recently-donated photographs, presented in the Focus Gallery section of the Museum’s Permanent Collection installation.

On Saturday, 9/10/2011 in Fort Lauderdale…
Patriot Insurance Company is hosting a 5K run to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Called the Tunnel To Towers Ft. Lauderdale 5k Run & Walk, the event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 7:30 a.m. It will be held at Huizenga Park in downtown Ft. Lauderdale. Runner registration is here.

On Sunday, 9/11/2011 in Fort Lauderdale…

The Fort Lauderdale Fire and Safety Museum Inc. will hold a brief “Remembrance” ceremony beginning at 9:30 am on Sunday September 11, at the Restored Fire Museum located at 1022 W. Las Olas Blvd, Fort Lauderdale.

All residents, Visitors, employees and Public Safety Personnel all Departments are invited to participate in the ceremony that will last approximately 45 minutes. All guests are asked to dress comfortably. All uniform personnel are requested to wear “class A” dress uniform. In the event of rain a small ceremony will be moved inside the museum. The museum will also be open for viewing with refreshments to follow.

On Sunday, 9/11/2011 at 6pm in Miami…

Trinity Cathedral will commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11 with a multi-media commemoration and memorial Eucharist.

The service will include a candlelight tribute as well as singers from throughout South Florida in a presentation of the Requiem Mass by Gabriel Fauré, which was the music chosen to substitute the planned program on the evening of 9/11/01 at the BBC Promenade of Concerts. The musical work was chosen because of its suitability to commemorate such an occasion.

The choir for the commemoration at Trinity will be amassed by the Miami Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Interested participants for the choir should contact Matthew Steynor at [email protected].

The performance will be open to the public. The Episcopal cathedral is at 464 NE 16th St in Miami.

On Sunday, 9/11/2011 at 7:30pm in Boca Raton…
In Boca Raton, rabbis from five synagogues will join religious leaders from five Christian churches, the Islamic Center of Boca Raton and the South Florida Zen Group for a program at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Beth El , 333 SW Fourth Ave. in Boca Raton. Call 954-391-8900.

Joining Temple Beth El and B’nai Torah Congregation, which organized the service, are Congregation B’nai Israel , Beth Ami Congregation and Congregation Shaarei Kodesh and the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County ‘s Jewish Community Relations Council. The Boca Raton Interfaith Clergy Association is sponsoring the program.

First responders – police and fire fighters – will participate in a candle lighting ceremony. The service will include playing a recording of a 9-11 memorial program in which Rabbi Irwin Kula reads from published phone records of the last calls made by victims to loved ones. The music of “Lamentations” accompanies the reading.

The service will memorialize those who perished in the 9-11 attacks with sacred readings and stories about them, followed by healing words and music. The singing of “God Bless America” will conclude the program.
