Simpson Grabs Early Lead at Waste Management Open

The 2012 Waste Management Open began Thursday, February 2, 2012, at the TPC Stadium Course in Scottsdale, Arizona. With 66 players, half the field, teeing off in the morning, Webb Simpson grabbed the clubhouse lead with a 6-under par score of 65. Four others are a single shot behind.

Webb Simpson

Playing the back nine first, Simpson birdied 6 of 7 holes from #14 to #2. While struggling a bit with his driver, Webb hit 15 of 18 greens in regulation. His only blemish in today’s round was a bogey at the par-4 6th hole, where he failed to convert an attempted sand save.

Kevin Na

Kevin Na was the picture of consistency this morning. He hit 10 of 14 fairways, stayed out of the bunkers, and is the only player among the leaders to have been bogey-free. Na opened with a 3-under score of 32 on the front nine, followed by a 2-under 34 on the back.

Jarrod Lyle

Like Webb Simpson, Lyle started on the back nine. Beginning with an eagle on the par-5 13th hole, Lyle was 5 under par for a stretch of 5 holes, including a birdie at the ultimate “stadium” hole in golf (the par-3 16th). In 96 prior PGA events, Jarrod Lyle has 4 top 10 finishes, but has never claimed a PGA Tour victory.

Harrison Frazar

Frazar opened with a pair of birdies on the first two holes, followed with another pair on holes #7 and #8, and added a final pair at #12 and #13. Finding 10 fairways and 14 greens, Harrison Frazar had a very solid round, faltering only with a bogey from the sand in front of the screaming crowd at #16.

Derek Lamely

Derek played a rather pedestrian front side, with a birdie on #3 and bogey on #8, posting an even par 35. it all changed on the back side, with a birdie at #10, then 4 birdies in 5 holes beginning with #13. His 5-under par 31 on the back nine was highlighted with a birdie in the stadium bowl on #16. Lamely completed his first round needing only 25 putts.
