Season Four of ‘Fringe’ to Be a New Beginning

The last episode of the third season of “Fringe” ended with not so much the death of a main character, Peter Bishop, than the wiping out of his very existence. But this seems to be just a temporary condition on the weirdest show on television.

Most of the third season featured how two parallel universes, ours and another’s, had been threatened with destruction and the efforts of the Fringe Division people in each universe to stop it. The destruction was stopped, at least temporarily, by the wiping out of Peter from existence.

A trailer for Season Four, which starts Friday, is now out. It appears that the Fringe Division is still in operation in the Peterless universe, with Walter still as crazy as ever, bringing a bird back to life, albeit for a few minutes, and doing other experiments. Olivia is in charge, apparently having been the one to bring Walter out of the mental institution. There is also a new character, named Lincoln Lee, joining the team to investigate the case of a shape shifter.

The end of the trailer has two “Observers,” mysterious beings who have been involved in some of the events of the show, cryptically talking about the “child who lived to become a man.” This suggests that Peter, at least in some form, will be back.

Indeed, viewers of “Fringe” may recall that there were two versions of Peter. The one from our universe died. Our universe’s Walter kidnapped the Peter from the alternate universe and raised him as his own. So it would seem that the original Peter may have survived in the new version of reality and will be making an appearance at some point.

The producers of “Fringe” regard the first episode of the new season as essentially a new pilot. The two universes have somehow been joined together, with consequences that will no doubt unfold as the show progresses. How the altered reality played out without the Peter who got wiped out of existence will apparently be told in flashbacks. In any case, one should expect the unexpected to occur on the new, rebooted, but still unusual “Fringe.”
