Save Your Cash, Go Independent

When people decide they want to see a movie the first place they go is Moviefone or Fandango to check movie times. Most of the time they wind up going to a chain theater and spending an arm and a leg to see a movie. In Brooklyn there are a lot of choices when it comes to going to see a movie. When I go to see a movie I like to go to independent theaters and save some money.

Around here there are a few different independent theaters such as The Pavilion, Cobble Hill Theater, BAM theater and Brooklyn Heights Cinema. I’ve personally only been to The Pavilion and Cobble Hill Theater and though they are both independent theaters they have their differences.

The Pavilion sits across the street from Prospect Park in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Literally right around the corner is the F train station and along 9th avenue there are multiple restaurants and bars. The Pavilion has a nice sized lobby with a big concession stand with all the treats movie goers love. The theater has a mix of small and large screening rooms on the main floor and on the other levels. Ticket prices depend on what your going to see. A regular movie ticket costs $12 for adults and $10 for children and seniors, while a 3D movie will run you $15 for an Adult. Sometimes they show early morning children’s cartoon movies on the weekends for a discounted price. For anyone living in the Park Slope area this is a great theater to take a nice walk up to especially with the park right across the street.

The Cobble Hill Cinema theater is locates down in Carrell Gardens on Court Street and is a short walk from the F station. It’s located blocks away from a multitude of restaurants and bars for before or after the movies. The building and it’s stairways are decorated with famous movie characters painted on the walls. In side there is a great little lobby with a small concession stand with a slush machine and prices that are easy on your wallet. This theater really has a great independent feel to it and it one of my favorite theaters to go to in Brooklyn. The ticket prices are $10 for adults and $7 for children and seniors and for 3D movies its only $2 extra. On Tues and Thurs all seats are only $7 except for special events, 3D movies or holidays. Mon-Fri until 5pm and Sat-Sun until 2pm the movies are also $7 except for special events, 3D movie and holidays. The second and fourth Friday of every month they host a Parents and Babies screening. During the school year they have Big Movies for Little Kids with $7 showings of all different types of movies for kids ages two and up.
