Pie in a Jar

If you’re someone who enjoys baking you might also like changing things up a bit, on occasion. For example, if you always make the birthday cakes for the members of your family you might like creating a new and different cake each time. If you’re that person, and you’ve made every pie you can think of, and you’ve served them hot, cold, with ice cream, with whip cream, and even more ways, you might just think that there is nothing else you can do with pie. But have you made jar pies yet? They’re fabulous because each person gets one of their own and because they’re very simple to make.

You can prepare apples, cherries, or other pie fillings, and do so following a favorite recipe. Or, you can make things really easy on yourself and purchase canned pie filling.

Use eight, half-pint canning jars to make eight individual fruit pies. Use refrigerated pie dough as the crust for the jar pies. You’ll need half of a pie crust for each jar. Lay the pie dough out on a flat surface and cut eight circles. Use one of the half-pint jar lids as the cookie cutter for the dough.

After cutting the dough push a circle into each jar. The jars are short enough that you can reach down into the bottom and position the dough. Cut the remainder of the crust into strips.

Fill each jar about two-thirds full of the chosen pie filling – whether homemade or canned. Then, lay strips of dough across the top of the pie, cris-crossing them on top, and set these jars on a cookie sheet.

Do not preheat the oven so you ensure that the jars do not break; cold jars put in a hot oven could crack. Set the jars of pie – with cookie sheet – on the oven rack and bake at 375 degrees. If you’ve cut up your own apples you’ll need to bake the pies for forty-five minutes to an hour, or until the crust is browned and the filling is bubbly. It can take a little less time if you’re using canned pie filling; just remove the jar pies when the crust is browned.

The jar pies can be served hot or cold – with or without a lid. Serve them as-is or top them with ice cream, nuts, whip cream, chocolate or other sauce, or even certain candies. Serve the jar pies as wedding favors, give them as gifts, or just enjoy them at your next family picnic.
