While CEOs and multi-millionaires are sitting in laps of luxury, millions don’t know where their next meals are coming from. No longer is the American dream a reality. To some, it’s just that; only a dream. Millions have decided to take a stand and fight the corruption of Wall Street and the collapse of the country that has made the American dream no longer a reality.
Pensacolians have joined in the campaign. “Occupy” Pensacola demonstrators began assembling on Saturday, Oct. 15, at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza. Over 500 demonstrators gathered voicing various concerns about the way to battle the problem caused by corporate greed and Wall Street.
Demonstrators carried signs advocating limiting terms in Congress, abolishing the Federal Reserve, feeding the poor, legalizing marijuana, preventing the buying of positions of power and other admonishments. The signs were carried by varied groups of demonstrators. Supporters waved, blew their horns, joined in the demonstrations and even took up carrying their own signs.
Opinions varied on subjects from anger at the many GOP opinions to how the term “entitlement” programs came to be. Protestors are wondering how Rep. John Boehner or the GOP can call these programs “entitlement” programs when millions paid into these programs over years of employment. They state the programs were the very ones the government has used to fund wars and pay the huge salaries in addition to the benefits they continue to draw for years after leaving office, but fail to see that they are receiving entitlements from these funds.
“Occupy” protestors began assembling in the plaza around 3 p.m. and stayed until well past 11 p.m. The rally was peaceful. No one was arrested and no one caused any disturbance. Pensacola Occupy protestors have many causes. Some are responding to the Deepwater Oil Spill. While some are targeting the Florida governor position said to have been bought for $70 million by Florida governor Scott. One protestor was there protesting the fact that she cannot find a job after receiving a degree yet she still cannot find a job to help pay for over $93,000 in student loans.
All protestors agree the problem is everyone’s. It’s Democratic, Republican, bi-partisan; no one is unaffected. Everyone is going to be impacted and everyone needs to take a stand to take the heal America and take our country back.
