Our Camping Bloopers

Visual acuity is not my best talent. In fact, not only is seeing a problem, sometimes I forget to look, or at least look in the right place. This can have some interesting results.

Catching the Fisherman: When using a fishing pole, one is supposed to catch fish. Most of the time, I catch things, but none of them are either edible or naturally aquatic. I have caught trees (once I got five in one cast), roots, rocks and a fisherman. He was out in a dinghy (glad I didn’t catch that, as it was rubber), and was most surprised to have a fish hook snag his shirt.

Hitch Drop: When detaching a trailer from a truck, it is a good idea to have the wheels blocked, chocked or otherwise unable to move. Not doing so can cause the hitch end to come off its block and land in the dirt…hard. Thankfully, it didn’t break anything.

Yes, you need Sandals: When we were tent camping for the very last time, I woke up in the middle of the night requiring a trip to the restroom. It was dark and all I had with me, foot covering wise, was a pair of hiking boots. So, I walked to the bathroom barefoot.

This was *not* a good idea. The road to the restroom was, at one point in time, asphalt. At the time I traversed it sans shoes, it was asphalt covered in tiny pieces of asphalt gravel. Needless to say, my feet were not happy at the results.

Spying the Curb and Missing the Tree: That was embarrassing. I knew where the tires needed to be, but I forgot that about four feet of trailer stuck out in back of said tires. Overhead were some very sturdy branches of a very sturdy tree. We now have a dent near the top of our trailer caused by a connection between the two.

Pot Holes: This is one where I should have looked where I was going and not towards the person I was talking to. I stepped on one that was just the size of my shoe and down I went, complete with scrapped hands and cheek.

There have been many more bloopers than these. Trying to light a fire with wet wood comes back to haunt me from time to time when starting a camp fire. The pine flavored chocolate cake does as well. Camping is a lot of fun, but like anything else in life, the human element can cause memories that last a lifetime. Some of them are even funny.
