Now on DVD: True Grit

Synopsis: A 14-year-old girl (Hailee Steinfeld) seeks to avenge her father’s murder by hiring a U. S. Marshal (Jeff Bridges) to hunt down the man who shot him.

What I liked about this movie: Overall, I do feel the need to give this movie some points for realism. Unlike the 1969 John Wayne version of this film, this Marshal Cogburn isn’t exactly a loveable person. He has no problem working outside the law and, thanks to his drinking, isn’t guaranteed to be a straight shot or even a joy to be around; much like I imagine the real Old West might have been.

Matt Damon did a surprising job as the competing Texas Ranger LaBoeuf. There were times when I didn’t even recognize him from his earlier movies.

And, even though Bridges managed to dominate scenes as Cogburn, I do have to admit Steinfeld held her own as the sharp witted and sharp tongued teenager who hired him. The girl had a good mix of book smarts and common sense but there was still just the right amount of naivety too.

What I didn’t like about this movie: I’m not a huge fan of the Western genre and the only reason I will watch them on occasion is for the gunfights and cowboy brawls. Unfortunately, other than a couple intense scenes, the action was kept pretty minimal. In fact, there were times when I honestly would describe this movie as being a bit dull.

Some people will defend the movie by saying it is based closely on the book. I will counter by saying some things are better in books and should be left in writing and not brought to life.

Final Opinion: This movie might have gotten some rave reviews and may have been nominated for Academy Awards but I still think the John Wayne version was better.

Average Netflix Grade: 3.9 stars out of a possible 5.

My Grade: 3 stars.
