My True UFO Story

The twin lights loomed at us from the night sky. It looked like a car headlight. We wondered what it was. Did a car wreck and go airborne? Was it a small plane crashing? It seemed to hone right in on us. We were fascinated and terrified. The car engine conked out and we managed to coast to the side of the road.

Just before we thought it would hit us, it started hovering, outlining the car in its lights. My husband tried to rev the car into escape mode, but it failed to start. The thing hovered noiselessly for about 20 minutes keeping us captive in its beams.

It happened on a country road near Honeoye, NY as we headed home from a weekend visiting relatives in the city, sometime in the mid 1990s.

As months passed, I relegated the event to the realm of dreams or my excessively active imagination. This probably never happened, I thought. My two sons and husband never spoke of it after the first few days. Perhaps the kids at school scoffed at the idea. I reveled in the knowledge that it let us go unharmed.

My boys brought home piles of papers and books at the end of school that June. Weeks later, I started sorting them out, trashing most and saving a few special papers for posterity. With their permission, I scanned through the diaries they kept in class.

Among the usual reports of tests, homework hatred, so and so is a dumb bum, and other useless trivia, I found their entries for that date. Each wrote about the incident in detail and with a hint of dread.

I realized that we really did have an encounter with an unidentified flying object. What was it? I will never know. Why did it shadow our car? Another unexplained mystery. Many things in the universe remain enigmas to us as we embark on an era of increased information and the quest to make all things known.

I wonder if I really want to know the answer to this mystery. Is it really necessary to know all?
