Man Up!

Man Up! What does that mean to you when you hear that? When I hear it, I assume it means that there is guy who needs to get himself together and take the blow no matter which way it goes, good or bad. These days, “Man Up” is a sitcom on ABC this fall which debuted last night, Tuesday October 18th. But if these men are supposed to be what we think men are like these days, then we as a people may be in trouble.

The producers of “Man Up” are going for a specific audience: the “Hangover” crowd. Now as a 43 year old woman, I enjoyed the movie “The Hangover,” but so did twenty year old men. So what does that mean? I supposed it means that his new show could appeal to a wide range since I saw the movie as a woman watching it through “mom eyes” and those twenty year olds saw the movie through, well, immature eyes.

“Man Up” stars “Mather Zickel (Will), Christopher Moynihan (Craig) and Dan Fogler (Kenny) as three men struggling to remain men in a post-metrosexual world where manly displays of testosterone-fueled aggression have been relegated to online gaming.” Right there, in that long sentence of seemingly unknown actors and too many boring words, they lose me.

But, “Man Up” has the typical makings of sitcom, for instance, there is a thirteen year old son, which we all know is a tough age with lots of drama, an ex that keeps one of the men coming back for more, and an exes new boyfriend, who happens to look pretty great, that causes competition.

This show, bascially, could go either way. Sometimes the best laughs are saved for shows down the road instead of the pilot, and sometimes the funniest episode IS the pilot. I think it depends on how people feel about this show. And time will tell.

“Man Up” airs on ABC on Tuesday nights.
