Las Vegas Without the Strip? Why Yes!

When people consider Las Vegas as a vacation, most immediately think of the Strip or, to a lesser extent, the Downtown Freemont Street area. However, you may not realize is that there are plenty of resort offerings that are in less notorious areas of the city, and are considerably less expensive.

Only a ten minute drive east on I-215 from McCarren Airport is one of the nicest off-Strip casinos in the city, Green Valley Ranch Station Resort and Spa. A member of the Station family of casinos, GVR is located in an a relatively well-to-do area of Las Vegas and offers some great benefits. First, the hotel is outstanding with rooms that start around $100. The casino is large, rivaling anything found on the strip, and offers all your favorite slots and table games. There is a large pool and outstanding spa with very reasonable prices. Just outside of the hotel proper is a beautiful open-air mall offering, amongst others, Anthropologie, Loft and Williams-Sonoma. Dining opportunities at GVR are excellent from Italian to seafood to steaks, and everything in-between, all delicious and very reasonably priced. In the mall area offerings like Cheesecake Factory and P.F. Chang’s can satisfy your craving for comfort food, too.

A little further off the Strip in the Summerlin area of West Las Vegas is another Station Casino, Red Rock Casino and Resort. Where Green Valley Ranch is focused on luxury, Red Rock, my personal favorite casino in all of Las Vegas, focuses on a more youthful clientele. It’s food offerings, accommodations and casino floor are all similar to GVR. But, where Red Rock defines itself is in its concert amphitheatre that attracts top-billed acts like Enrique Iglesias and Gavin Degraw, as well as it’s hopping bars and clubs. Two such options are the poolside bar where you can sip some great drinks with scores of your best bikini-clad friends next to the 3 acre pool, and Rocks Lounge, the high-end nightclub. The resort is also family-friendly with a large movie theater, arcade and even a bowling alley!

If you are traveling to Vegas and would like to save a little money while getting the whole experience, try Green Valley Ranch Station or Red Rock. Their offerings are just like on the Strip but at off-Strip prices.
