Knitted Jayne Cobb Hat

Gauge: 4.5 stitches to the inch in stockinet stitch.

Needles: Double Points, size US 8 (5 mm)
Note: a 16″ circular can be used, but eventually the double points will be needed to complete the decreases at the top

Sizes: One-Size Fits Most

Suggested Yarn: Because of the uniqueness in color, multiple yarn brands were used in order to get just the right shades.

Color A: Medium Orange: Universal’s Classic Worsted, #652
Color B: Gold: Paton’s Classic Wool Merino, #204
Color C: Dark Orange: Brown Sheeps’ Nature Spun Worsted, #861
Approximately 50 yards of each color is needed.

Pattern Stitches:
K2tog: Knit two stitches together
SSK: Slip first stitch as if to purl, knit one, pass slipped stitch over the knitted stitch

First Color Band:

CO 90 Stitches on size 8 us (5 mm) needles in color A, join stitches in the round, being careful not to twist. Mark the beginning of the round with a stitch marker or leave tail.

Purl the first round.

Knit 18 rounds.

Second Color Band:
Switch to color B.

Knit 9 rounds.

Begin the decreases as described below.

Decreases:
Round 29: *K7, K2tog* Repeat 9x more

Rounds 30-32: Knit

Round 33: *K6, K2tog* Repeat 9x more

Rounds 34-35: Knit

Round 36: *K5, K2tog* Repeat 9x more

Round 37: Knit

Round 38: *K4, K2tog* Repeat 9x more

Round 39: Knit

Round 40: *K3, K2tog* Repeat 9x more

Round 41: Knit

Round 42: *K2, K2tog* Repeat 9x more

Round 43: *K1, K2tog* Repeat 9x more

Round 44: K2tog ten times

Cut yarn and pull it through the remaining 10 stitches. Pull tight and to underside and sew in end.

Right Ear Flap:
Using color C, count 10 sts from CO tail and pick up 20 sts along CO edge.

Row 1: K2, P16, K2

Row 2: K all

Repeat rows 1 & 2 three more times

Row 9: Repeat row 1

Row 10: K2, ssk, K12, K2tog, K2

Row 11: K2, P14, K2

Row 12: K2, ssk, K10, K2tog, K2

Row 13: K2, P12, K2

Row 14: K2, ssk, K8, K2tog, K2

Row 15: K2, P10, K2

Row 16: K2, ssk, K6, K2tog, K2

Row 17: K2, P8, K2

Row 18: K2, ssk, K4, K2tog, K2

Row 19: K2, P6, K2

Row 20: K2, ssk, K2, K2tog, K2

Row 21: K2, P4, K2

Row 22: K2, ssk, K2tog, K2

Row 23: K6

BO the remaining 6 sts. Cut a 20″ tail and weave in the end of the tail but leave a loop that folded in half is about 9″.

Finishing Instructions:
Right Ear Flap:
Cut 2 18″ lengths of color C and thread them through the center of the ear flap’s bottom edge and the other corner than the “BO loop”.

Use these three “double strands” to make a short braid (about 4-6″), knot the end and trim.

Left Ear Flap:

Using color C, count 30 sts across the front of the hat and pick up 20 stitches along CO edge. Knit and finish same as the right ear flap.

Pom Pom:
Using Color A and/or C, make a pom pom 2 1/4″ in diameter with either a pom pom maker or two washers.

Attach to the top of hat by using the long ends of yarn tied around the center of pom pom.

Sew in all remaining ends, wear and enjoy!
