How to Spend Time with a Basset Hound

If you enjoy working with gentle, friendly dogs, you will love being around Basset Hounds, as this breed of dog are a delight to work with. But as a pet sitter, you will want to do more than provide the dog with just the basics in healthcare and nutrition. You will also need to think of important ways to spend time with the dog. What is the best way to spend time with a Basset Hound?

Spend Quality 1-1 Time with the Dog

Basset Hounds can easily be overlooked in a dog-loving family, as they are gentle, docile animals, that often give way to stronger-willed dogs in the family. If you are caring for a Basset Hound, along with a Blood Hound or a Great Dane, make sure you do not allow the other dogs to take all your time away from the Basset Hound. Make it a point to also spend quality 1-1 time with the Basset Hound.

Provide the Dog with Moderate Exercise Each Day

It is important for pet sitters to provide Basset Hounds with plenty of moderate exercise each day to help keep the dog in tip-top condition by guarding against the risk of obesity. As this breed of dog has a long barrel-shaped body with short legs, excess weight can put incredible strain on the dog’s legs and spine, which is why daily exercise can help the dog stay in shape. There is no need to provide vigorous exercise for the dog. Daily walks, at a moderate pace can make a big difference to the quality of life of a Basset hound.

Offer Opportunities for Play

A great way to spend time with a Basset Hound is to go outside and play with a ball or with one of the dog’s toy. Not only will the dog enjoy the fresh air and extra exercise, but you will form a closer relationship with the animal than if you were to simply provide the bare basics of care. Playing with the dog will help stimulate him and if he sometimes has trouble settling down to sleep, a good play session out back will put him in the mood for a nap when you are gone.

Basset Hounds are a joy to care for, as they are not as demanding as some breeds of dog that want constant attention. They are sweet-tempered and easy to manage, especially with pet sitters who go the extra mile with them by spending quality time with them, offer moderate exercise and playtime.
