How to Obtain and File an FCC Form 740

FCC Form 740 is required by the Federal Communications Commission when importing certain radio, TV, or electronic devices. This also applies to people buying computers overseas and bringing them into the United States.

The purpose of Form 740 is to identify items that may cause frequency interference in communications. However, there are some common exceptions to the inspection requirement. Those who are importing 3 or less computers or related electronic items for personal use only can typically just fill out the form and then be on their way.

Form 740 is filled out and given to U.S. Customs on or before the day that the imported items arrive. You may download a paper form by using the link below.

Those who have to file this import form include individuals importing the following items: radio receivers, TV receivers, transmitters, converters, radio frequency amplifiers, industrial heaters, microwave ovens, transceivers, computers, and ultrasonic equipment. This is only a partial list. Anything that could interfere with radio frequencies could be subject to filing by Form 740 and inspection.

For those importing three or less radio receivers, unintentional radiators, or personal computers, you should put “See Box 7 in Part II” in the FCC ID block and then check Box 7 in Part II to show that you are exempt from inspection.
